CM Punk's current lawsuit against WWE doctor Chris Amann has revealed some interesting things about the business of professional wrestling.

Punk left WWE back in 2014 citing several issues with the company. One such issue was that he feels a lump on his back was grossly mistreated by Amann, and Punk subsequently went on his friend Colt Cabana's podcast to discuss it.

Of course, Punk is no longer associated with the professional wrestling world since making the career swap to mixed martial arts (MMA), but the lawsuit from Amann certainly has people talking.

In regards to what is actually being said during the trial, some interesting secrets as to how WWE operates during matches have come to light.

On day two of the trial, WWE timekeeper Mark Yeaton testified and offered some insight into how the matches are orchestrated on the shows.

Referees Microphones?

Yeaton disputed the popular belief that WWE referees have microphones that communicate backstage during matches.

He then revealed the only time that referees have microphones on them is during a particular gimmick match - a Falls Count Anywhere match.

Instead, it's the timekeeper that has direct communication with Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn who are running things backstage. The timekeeper communicates with the referees through hand signals.

Hand Signals

WWE referee John Cone (father of former RAW Tag Team Champion Nicholas) also testified and provided insight into the actual hand signals used between referees and timekeepers to communicate.

Cone noted that "Yes" is a closed fist, "No" is a shake of the head, and of course everyone knows that the dreaded "X" symbol is for legitimate injuries.

When asked what happens if the "X" sign is thrown up, Yeaton revealed that if a referee gives the signal the timekeeper's job is to make sure the camera isn't filming the injury.

He also gets into direct communication with the referee to determine what happens next.

This could mean anything from deciding to finish the match early (if the injured party can compete), or canceling the match right on the spot.
