Manchester United are going to need a big summer if they want to challenge Manchester City next season.

Jose Mourinho’s side finished a massive 19 points behind their rivals in the league table and, after their FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea, ended the season trophyless.

Mourinho may have already spent a fortune since he took over at United two years ago but he’s going to have to splash the cash once again it seems.

And it appears he’s not willing to wait until after the World Cup to make some signings.

Porto youngster Diogo Dalot looks set to arrive for £20 million but Mourinho wants to add a higher-profit signing in the coming days.

And, according to the Daily Mail, he thinks he’s done just that.

They’re claiming that Mourinho “feels he has now got” Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Brazilian will arrive for an initial fee of around £43m plus add-ons which would take it to £52.2m.

The 25-year-old was linked with City in January but, after a move collapsed, Mourinho stole in.

And with Brazil playing a friendly nearby against Croatia at Anfield, Fred will undergo his medical next week.

Mourinho has previously spoken of his desire to bring a Brazilian to Old Trafford, telling ESPN Brazil in April: "I think a team without a Brazilian isn't a team." He later added: "Who knows, we can have a Brazilian in the squad next year."

While many believed that Brazilian could be Chelsea’s Willian, it seems it’s actually going to be Fred.

While Mourinho will no doubt be happy at adding right-back Dalot and midfielder Fred, he will no doubt continuing to improve this United side to ensure there is no repeat of a trophyless campaign.
