Despite winning an unprecedented fourth Champions League title, the 2017/18 season was somewhat of a mixed bag for Gareth Bale. The Welshman suffered with injury earlier in the season and following his absence he struggled to break into Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven.Bale was largely left to watch from the side-line as Los Blancos trailed Barcelona in La Liga, whilst trudging through to yet another European final. After coming on as a substitute in the final, Bale was able to lift some of his gloom. He was the talk of the world after the victory over Liverpool, scoring two goals in the second half to clinch the game.Either side of two glaring Loris Karius mistakes, Bale’s overhead kick stood out as a mesmerising goal, and the key moment of the match. Some fans likened it to his manager Zidane’s strike against Bayer Leverkeusen in the 2002 final, whereas others thought it stood on its own as the best strike in Champions League history. It comes as a surprise then that after a poll by users of Uefa.com, it was another of the Welsh maestro’s goals to be voted as Champions League goal of the tournament.Against stiff competition – including Bale’s overhead kick, as well as team-mate Ronaldo’s against Juventus – a Bale volley at Borussia Dortmund in the group stage took the prize. You can see the winning goal below.

The 18th minute strike is certainly a great goal. Very few players would have the confidence to take the strike on first-time – and fewer still have the skill to execute it.

Bale sparked rumours of a departure with his comments after the Liverpool game, and it remains to be seen if the shock exit of Zidane will affect his situation.

Turning 29 next month the Welsh forward is reaching his prime, and will know he needs to secure regular playing time for the upcoming season.

He has regularly been linked to Manchester United and Jose Mourinho, who knows what the summer will bring.
