Kyle Edmund's stock is certainly slowly but steadily on the rise as he remains the last Brit standing at Roland Garros this year.

American legend John McEnroe is even of the opinion that Edmund has the intrinsic qualities and techniques to compete against the very best in the sport.

He predicted that the Englishman will be in the world’s top 10, if not in the coming six months till the end of this year, but definitely in the next 12 months.

McEnroe insisted: “Get into the top 10 in the next year, maximum, maybe less.”

Edmund has beaten wild card entrant Alex de Minaur and Hungarian opposition Marton Fucsovics so far this week in Paris, dropping just a single set in the process.

After hearing McEnroe’s bold comments, the Yorkshireman revealed he has the confidence and belief to achieve a top 10 ranking.

“For someone to say that is great. Top 10 in waiting – okay, but I have to do it. It doesn’t just come," Edmund said, per The Star.

“You have to earn it, win the matches. You can’t just suddenly pop up there. I have to make it happen.

“I believe I can. I have confidence in my game, the way I have played against guys that are ranked at the top. Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev were top three in the world when I played them this year. I’ve played the No.1s in the world in Novak and Rafa Nadal."

Relatively young and with the scope of further improvements in the coming years, the world number 17 remains just as grounded as the teenager who first broke onto the scene just a few years ago.

“I’m still young at 23, but as you get older and move up the rankings, top 10 is for sure a goal. It has to be,” added Edmund.

Scheduled to face fiery Italian Fabio Fognini in the third round of the tournament later today, a win in that match will further prove what the Brit is capable of.

“This would definitely be a nice win if I can do it. Fognini is a seasoned pro, been around a long time, knows what he is doing, has always had a top ranking.”

Fognini, too, hailed the talent of the David Cup champion and said: “Kyle is growing as a player. He is more difficult for me to beat on hard court than clay. Now he is much better from a physical point of view.”
