Things got heated between these two fighters.

Former WSOF bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes is coming off the biggest win thus far in his pro-MMA career.

There was a lot of bad blood coming into this fight, which ended up serving as the headliner. So let’s break it down.

As seen in the main event of Friday’s (June 1, 2018) UFC Utica event, Moraes was able to finish top contender Jimmie Rivera by strikes after landing a huge head kick to win the bantamweight headliner that aired on FOX Sports 1 at Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York.

The main card aired on FOX Sports 1 at 10 PM ET while the preliminary card was split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 at 8 PM ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:30 PM ET.

Vinc Pichel vs. Gregor Gillespie in a lightweight bout served as the co-main event.

Rounding out this six bout main card was Walt Harris vs. Daniel Spitz in a heavyweight bout, Jake Ellenberger vs. Ben Saunders in a welterweight bout, Julio Arce vs. Daniel Teymur in a featherweight bout, and Sam Alvey vs. Gian Villante in a lightweight bout.

Both Rivera and Moraes manager, Ali Abdelaziz, gave some insight into this feud in interviews with MMAJunkie leading up to the fight.

“It’s his manager who I (expletive) hate,” Rivera said in March. “His manager’s a douchebag, called my wife a (expletive) when we were in Las Vegas. I think a lot of the things he says and does are from his manager.”

Abdelaziz, for his part, denied ever calling Rivera’s wife a nasty name, saying it was directed at Rivera during their run-in in Las Vegas.

“I don’t respect him as a person, because I think he was doing everything he could not to fight Marlon,” Abdelaziz told MMAjunkie in March. “But at the end of the day, I got what Marlon wanted. Marlon wanted this fight, and the reason Marlon wanted this fight is Rivera is one of the best fighters in the world. If Jimmie Rivera has something to say to me, then he can say it to my face.”

Fast forward to after the fight, Rivera was interviewed by the FS1 crew and cameras were able to capture an altercation between Rivera, his wife, and another person, who appeared to be Abdelaziz.

“It’s not really, there’s no tension between (Moraes) and I,” Rivera said (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie). “There’s no tension with the camps. It’s just his management. His manager keeps running his mouth, and it is what it is. We let it go.”
