Liverpool are reportedly on the look out for a new goalkeeper after Loris Karius' horror-show in the Champions League final.

The German shot stopper had started to come into his own during 2018, displacing Simon Mignolet in the starting XI and delivering a number of impressive performances.

In the biggest game of his career, though, the wheels flew off during a nightmare evening in Kiev.

After a first-half stalemate, Karius inexplicably threw the ball into the path of Karim Benzema who stabbed home a bizarre opening goal.

Then, in the closing minutes, the 24-year-old failed to hold a long-range Gareth Bale effort as Real Madrid ran out 3-1 victors.

Possible Karius replacements

Sadly for Karius, it will go down as one of the all-time nightmare goalkeeping performances and many are doubting whether there's anyway back for him.

And since the final, rumours that Liverpool are chasing moves for Alisson Becker and Jan Oblak are increasing by the week.

If reports are to be believed, the Reds are going all-out to ensure they have a more accomplished number one between the sticks for the 2018-19 campaign.

Liverpool monitoring McCarthy

Marry that to the arrivals of Naby Keita, Fabinho and potentially Nabil Fekir and you have yourself an exciting squad going forward.

Nevertheless, according to the Mirror, Jurgen Klopp actually has his eye on a rather unexpected Premier League goalkeeper who could move to Liverpool this summer.

It's been revealed that Liverpool have been monitoring Southampton's Alex McCarthy ever since the Champions League final.

There's every reason to suggest McCarthy will be leaving the St. Mary's Stadium soon with his contract demands of £60,000-a-week causing frustration on the south coast.

And it's also believed that Tottenham are interested in his signature.

The 28-year-old amassed 21 appearances this season as the Saints narrowly dodged relegation.

It can be safely assumed that Alisson and Oblak would be Klopp's preferred options and it's unlikely that he would buy two goalkeepers this summer.

However, if a world-class shot stopper was off the cards, McCarthy could be a solid option for the Reds.

If Klopp can pull it off, then Liverpool will be oh-so close to a starting XI worthy of competing for the Premier League and perhaps staging another Champions League run.

One thing is for certain, though, and it's that Karius' future looks thoroughly unclear.
