What’s just happened to former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara is very unexpected

There are few things sadder in football than unfulfilled potential and wasted talent.

A young footballer can possess all the ability in the world but will achieve little in the sport unless his attitude is right.

Coaches will forgive technical mistakes but they won’t accept a lack of effort or the failure to act professionally both on and off the pitch.

Some players fall out of love with the game after discovering what elite-level football is really like - former England international David Bentley is perhaps one of the most famous examples of that - while others struggle with the criticism and scrutiny.

Jamie O’Hara, who played with Bentley at Tottenham around 10 years ago, sadly falls into the ‘wasted talent’ category.

The Dartford-born midfielder, who was tipped for big things in the game during the early stages of his professional career, possessed a sweet left foot and could open up a defence with an incisive pass. He could also beat players and had an eye for goal.

As a youngster, his style of play wasn’t dissimilar to Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere.

O'Hara last played professionally in 2016

However, he failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at White Hart Lane and eventually left the north London outfit in 2011 following loan spells with Chesterfield, Millwall, Portsmouth and Wolves.

O’Hara spent three years at Molineaux before signing for Blackpool, Fulham and then Gillingham in 2016.

The former England Under-21 international hadn’t even turned 30 and was now playing in the third tier of English football.

Sadly, though, O’Hara made just a couple of appearances for the Gills before mutually agreeing to terminate his contract due to injuries.

What he's done to get his career back on track

Months after leaving Priestfield, O’Hara was appearing on Celebrity Big Brother (CBB) alongside Jedward.

Now 31, O’Hara currently plies his trade with Billericay Town in the National League South. But what he’s done to get his career back on track is very unexpected.

Per the Mirror, the midfielder has had liposuction to get rid of excess belly fat, caused by ‘scoffing junk food’ since appearing on CBB.

“I’ve struggled with self-esteem and body confidence,” O’Hara said. “So today I’m getting vaser lipo, it’s something I’ve wanted for a while.

“After seeing pics of me on holiday I realised how out of shape I was. I’m using treatment to kickstart a healthy regime.

“Since Big Brother my diet has been poor. I put on a lot of weight round my stomach.

“Vaser lipo is a light lipo to remove stubborn fat. Not saying this is the answer... I just wanted to try it and see the results.”

Good luck, Jamie.

If he can rediscover his form and self-belief then there’s definitely a player there with the talent to be playing somewhere in the Football League.
