A lot of the pre-World Cup football headlines are sure to be dominated by Manchester United.

With the transfer window in full swing, the Red Devils have been linked with a whole host of high-profile moves, with several set to be completed before the World Cup starts on June 14.

Highly-rated Porto right-back Diogo Dalot is set to sign, while Shakhtar Donetsk's Fred is reportedly scheduled for a medical in the coming days.

Both players will seriously improve a United squad which really underperformed as a whole in 2017/18.

A second place finish did little to mask the lack of progress under Jose Mourinho, with their FA Cup final loss to Chelsea not exactly helping his cause.

As such, there is serious onus on United pulling off a 'marquee signing' this summer, an arrival that will leave their Premier League rivals green with envy.

Gareth Bale was being touted as the man for the job, but Zinedine Zidane's departure from Real Madrid could lead to the Welshman staying in Spain.

And it appears United are aware of that situation, because they've identified a new £100m target that Mourinho wants to make his marquee signing for the summer.

As reported by the The Sun, United want to land Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti, a player they have shown interest in before.

The Italian star would be the ideal man to lineup next to Nemanja Matic in midfield, allowing Pogba to finally flourish in a free role ahead of them.

While Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay have tried to perform in the same role, someone with Verratti's world-class skillset would be a huge upgrade and perfect for the Frenchman.

Not too dissimilar to the role Andrea Pirlo played for Pogba when he announced himself to the world at Juventus.

The links to Verratti clearly shows that Mourinho is aware just how much needs to change in his midfield for next season.
