A week has passed since the Champions League final but to Loris Karius it probably feels like it’s been an entire year.

The Liverpool goalkeeper will still be reeling after the worst night of his career.

Those two inexplicable mistakes in Kiev, which gifted goals to Real Madrid duo Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, will have been on a continuous loop in his mind since last Saturday night.

Karius, who was extremely apologetic in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat, now faces an arduously long summer wondering whether Jurgen Klopp will sign a replacement.

Speculation is rife that the Liverpool boss will attempt to recruit a new number one, with AS Roma’s Alisson Becker, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Barcelona’s back-up keeper Jasper Cillessen all reportedly on his shortlist.

But it’s far from certain that Liverpool will be able to sign any of those three goalkeepers this summer.

Klopp won’t settle for any keeper and so there’s still a chance that Karius will be the No. 1 at Anfield at the start of the 2018-19 campaign.

Fowler has his say on Karius

But that wouldn’t be a positive outcome for Liverpool, according to legend Robbie Fowler, who has spoken about the 24-year-old in his latest column for the Mirror.

“Then there’s the keeper,” he said. “I felt for Loris Karius, and I don’t want to crucify him.

“But if you are there in these big games, then you have to be ready to perform. And obviously he didn’t.

“I’m sure it is a position Klopp will look at now. He needs to.”

Liverpool fans will surely agree with Fowler

It’s hard to imagine many - if any - Liverpool fans disagreeing with Fowler here.

Karius, on the biggest night of his career, messed up beyond belief. Can Klopp ever trust him again?

Just when Liverpool fans were starting to believe that a new goalkeeper at Anfield might not be necessary, following a string of impressive performances in between the sticks, the former Germany Under-21 international cost the Reds in their most important match since 2007.

Alisson or Oblak are the two keepers that the majority of Liverpool fans would love to see in the team next season, but either would cost a new world-record transfer fee for a goalkeeper.

Cillessen, the second choice at Barça, would cost less but still wouldn’t come cheap.

Another option is Jack Butland, who was unable to prevent Stoke City being relegated to the Championship this season.

The 25-year-old, who is also reportedly being monitored by Chelsea, is likely to be England’s number two at this month’s World Cup finals in Russia.
