There has been quite a reaction to the news that Loris Karius was suffering from concussion during the Champions League final, something that will surely explain his two terrible mistakes during the 3-1 loss to Real Madrid.Karius clashed with Sergio Ramos in the 49th-minute, with the Madrid captain seemingly elbowing him in the head.Just minutes later, the German goalkeeper inexplicably rolled the ball onto the leg of Karim Benzema to give the Spanish side the lead. Then, towards the end of the match, Karius fumbled Gareth Bale’s long-range strike into the back of the net to hand Madrid a 3-1 win.Karius was inconsolable at the end of the match and it looked as though his Liverpool career was over. However, on Monday, the Massachusetts General Hospital revealed that Karius had actually undergone “a comprehensive examination” and the results were pretty conclusive.“On May 31, 2018 Mr. Karius underwent a comprehensive examination by Dr. Ross Zafonte and Dr. Lenore Herget in Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital,” the statement began.“After carefully reviewing game film and integrating a detailed history – including his reported present and immediate post-contact subjective symptoms – physical examination and objective metrics, we have concluded that Mr. Karius sustained a concussion during the match May 26, 2018.

“At the time of our evaluation, Mr. Karius’s principal residual symptoms and objective signs suggested that visual spatial dysfunction existed and likely occurred immediately following the event.”

It’s fair to say the reaction to this news has been mixed.

Some fans now feel sorry for Karius and feel that he has been unfairly treated in the aftermath of the match.

However, some think that this is nothing more than a PR stunt and don’t actually think Karius was concussed.

However, a Twitter thread from sports scientist Ross Tucker is going viral - and it’s proved plenty of people wrong.

He is experienced in this field and has explained that although Karius didn’t show signs of concussion, he would probably have been affected by the clash with Ramos.

TWITTER THREAD ON KARIUS & CONCUSSION

Mr. Tucker sent 15 tweets on Karius - and how concussion should be treated in football - and here are a selection of his most interesting ones.

That certainly does explain a lot.

People have been far too quick to dismiss Karius’ scan results as a load of rubbish and maybe the whole topic of concussion needs to be taken a lot more seriously in future.
