Boxing fans have eagerly been awaiting a rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez for some time now.

The pair first met in September last year and that fight ended in a controversial split draw. Judges scored the 113–115, 114–114, 118–110.

Most viewers thought that GGG had just shaded the clash - but that a split draw was justified.

A CONTROVERSIAL CALL

The controversy wasn't over the result as a whole, but more surrounded just one of the judges, Adalaide Byrd - who scorecard was 118-110 in favour of Alvarez.

He was widely ridiculed after the bout and many believed his score was inexcusable. Due to the outcome of the fight, a rematch was scheduled for May 5, 2018.

Unfortunately, though, the fight was shelved a few months before that, when Alvarez tested positive to a banned substance in March.

The Mexican was given a six-month suspension - meaning he's allowed to fight again this summer - and his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has promised a September return.

WHO WILL HE FIGHT UPON RETURN?

However, it's still unclear who his first match back will be against - and that's because Golovkin's camp are driving hard negotiations.

Talks between the two broke down once again this week and it's understood that GGG's side are demanding improved terms to reach an agreement after Alvarez's drugs ban.

Of course, it all comes down to how the fight revenue is split, with GGG now apparently asking for a 50-50 share, but that is something that looks very unlikely to happen.

ESPN's fight sports insider Dan Rafael explained the situation recently, saying:

"Canelo had an agreement to get 65% before he failed two tests and messed everything up. Based on that he should rightly have to give up more to GGG to get the rematch done for September. But GGG is in la la land to think he can get 50%."

HOW TO MAKE THE REMATCH HAPPEN

That's clearly a view that De La Hoya shares. Canelo's promoter knows that Golovkin is desperate for a rematch, and wants to make it happen quickly.

And now, as talks have stalled once again, De La Hoya has explained exactly how easily the fight can be made - but GGG's side aren't going to like it.

“We will fight in September. Canelo is fighting in September,” he said on Monday, per Boxing News 24

“I think it’s just a matter of Eric Gomez sitting down and making it happen [with Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler]. I strongly feel if they can move from 50-50, then obviously this fight can be made."

The former champion went on to say that he doesn't believe they're being greedy asking for more than a 50-50 split - however, GGG might disagree.

"We’re not being greedy at all. We’re being very fair. As long as they can move from 50-50, this fight can easily be made."
