The final match-up of the World Boxing Super Series tournament at super-middleweight could feature another all-British bout in a reserve capacity.

According to World Boxing News, John Ryder and Chris Eubank Jr. are favourites to touch gloves in the main event should either Groves or Smith sustain an injury prior to the fight.

Chris Eubank Jr. was among the favourites to reach the final but came up against a naturally bigger fighter in Groves who executed his game-plan to perfection.

Groves, used his jab to control the bout, mostly fighting off his back foot, occasionally landing his big shots. The judges scored the fight 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 giving Groves the unanimous points victory.

The win came at a price for ‘Saint George’ though, as he dislocated his left shoulder throwing a left jab in the final round of the contest.

Rumours Eubank Jr. was initially offered the chance to replace the injured Groves in the finale have been denied by the WBSS.

Meanwhile, John Ryder is coming off two impressive early round KO’s over Jamie Cox and Patrick Nielsen and would go into the potential match-up with supreme confidence.

If either Eubank Jr. or Ryder are unable to compete then it is rumoured Zack Parker could be selected to replace one of them.

Parker, a 24-year-old Brit with 11 stoppages to his name, participated on the Callum Smith vs Erik Skoglund card and the Groves vs Eubank last-four match-up.

On both occasions, Parker showed his boxing prowess recording early victories. He holds big ambitions and has been made the mandatory challenger to the British title, which is currently held by Rocky Fielding.

More and more fighters are pulling out of contests due to injury and it is now more necessary than ever for the WBSS to always have replacements ready and waiting in the wings.

Notable recent examples include: Billy Joe Saunders, David Haye, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Kubrat Pulev.

Prior to fights, boxers go through a rigorous training camp to ensure they are in prime physical condition for their bout. There has to be a balance though between pushing the human body to new heights of physical condition and pushing the body too far whereby an injury occurs.

The final of the WBSS is scheduled for 14 July 2018 but it is looking more likely Smith and Groves won't actually face off until September, to ensure the latter is fully fit enough to compete.
