Jose Mourinho insisted in February that he had no intention of making any major signings at Manchester United this summer.

Well that lasted long. We're just over two weeks into the transfer window and the Portuguese has already splashed £52 million on a new midfielder.

United have agreed to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk in a move that the club's fans all saw coming and are now very happy about.

A statement read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos."

Fred has since confirmed the news on his own Instagram by posting on his story: "Proud to be red #FredIsRed."

It's a solid and much-needed signing from Mourinho, who needs a new central midfielder to play alongside Nemanja Matic and allow Paul Pogba to venture forward.

Fred is renowned for his all-action style of play and is just as good at tracking back and defending as he is pushing forward and creating chances.

THE PERFECT ADDITION

He played against United twice during the 2013/14 Champions League group stages at the age of 20, with Shakhtar drawing at home but losing 1-0 away.

Footage of Fred's performance at Old Trafford have now emerged on YouTube and they show what kind of player Mourinho has signed.

Composed on the ball, disciplined and strong, he looks the perfect partner for Matic as Mourinho seeks to bring balance in the middle of the park.

No guarantees can be made based on YouTube videos, but Fred was only 20 when he played so well against United and he's now 25, so you suspect he's improved greatly.

He's also been dubbed 'the new Fernandinho' which, if true, means United have a very talented player on their hands.

"A further announcement will be made in due course," is how the Red Devils ended their statement, but Fred is a Red and that's nothing but good news for the club.
