With a reputation for opening his mouth and letting whatever is in his head at the time dribble out, scouse puncher Tony Bellew was livid that Commonwealth Welterweight Champion Reece Bellotti was stopped by the referee, rather than facing a standing eight-count.Mancunian Ryan Doyle shocked Reece Bellotti, Bellotti's team, commentators and legion of fans to claim the title.Doyle, a former English champion in the division, has found winning ways hard to come by in recent years.Last night's victory was far from on the cards, and perhaps the intervention of some injudicious officiating robbed Bellotti of his chance to keep his title. The referee in last night's bout was the experienced, but somewhat controversial third-man Howard Foster, who contentiously stopped George Groves against Carl Froch back in November 2013.Renowned coach Dave Coldwell, who was commenting for Sky Sports, was angry at the call too, suggesting that a champion should be given the opportunity to answer a count. There is no denying the video evidence that Reece Bellotti was in some trouble, but without having appearing to sustain too much damage nor having had any eight-counts against him during the fight, the Watford fighter could rightfully have expected a standing count. That wasn't to be.Bellotti was knocked down in the fifth round and it was a minute further into the round when Foster stopped the fight.

An elated Doyle stated after his upset win: “I broke the bookies and we’re over the moon now. I knew what I had to do in the fight and I did it."

Earlier, Doyle had learned of the birth of his latest child, so it made for a big day in the Doyle camp.

“I got the full notice for this fight which is something that I’ve not had in the past, but Reece is a great champion and I want to thank him."

He added: “I’ve paid my dues, I’ve done it the hard way and now it’s time for my reign. I was under no illusion that he’s a big puncher, that he’s a brilliant fighter and now I’ve got his title."

Tony Bellew, who watched the fight, was typically verbose in his tweeting, saying: "That's a bad stoppage."

He followed up with: "He took a few clean, but you have to let him try and get up. Howard Foster panicked slightly again there. Groves Froch all over again that.. sorry to say it but that’s how I see it..."

However, a few minutes later, Bellew's third tweet was more placatory: "Take nothing away from Doyle there.. Put it all on the line there and found a way against a good puncher in Belloti.. Everyone will wanna see a rematch! Great little tear up."

The recipient of that decision, though, was more circumspect and praised his opponent.

Bellotti tweeted: "Gutted aint the word! But take nothing away from @RuthlessRyan17 [Ryan Doyle] - hit me with good shot! Felt like I should of been given chance of a count! All I want is rematch hope I can get it sorry to all the fans! I will be back and I will be better!"

Those of us who have seen the footage would suggest that a rematch is the fairest way to approach the decision. Whether Howard Foster made an error of judgement remains to be seen - pundits may well review the fight and comment.

One things is sure, however, Bellotti copped a good shot to the head, had already been down once in the round and was not defending himself too well up til the point the fight was stopped. Doyle won the fight based on that criteria and as has been said before, 'that's the ball game'.
