Zinedine Zidane's resignation as Real Madrid boss was a historic one for multiple reasons.

Firstly, he'd just won his third Champions League title in just two and a half years, bringing to an end the club's most successful spell for 60 years.

But it also represented the first time for a long, long time that a Real Madrid manager left voluntarily.

Real have developed an incredible reputation for impatience, sacking managers in spite of their previous success.

He might have won two La Liga titles and two Champions League's in four years, but Vicente del Bosque was let go just days after winning La Liga. Similarly, Fabio Capello would win Real's first La Liga title for four years but it was decided he didn't do it in the right way and he was sacked, once again, days later.

Carlo Ancelotti ended Real's 12-year wait for 'La Decima', their tenth European Cup, but that was only enough to secure his job for one more year.

And so Zidane quite possibly decided to jump before he was inevitably pushed, going out on an absolute high.

As for who the replacement will be, there's a lot of speculation. Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp, and Massimo Allegri have all been linked with the role - but has the new man's name been leaked already?

The President of Real Murcia, Víctor Gálvez, announced on Thursday that his club would no longer be pursuing Real Madrid youth coach Guti to become their new manager - because he'd agreed to become the senior team's boss.

“Guti is going to coach Real Madrid so he cannot coach Murcia," Galvez told the press. "He was the coach I wanted here.

“It's a shame that Zidane didn't resign two days later. Guti called me to thank me for our interest in him”.

So could that be that? It's difficult to understand why Galvez would make all of that up but certainly, nothing has been confirmed by Real.

We'll still have to wait and see - although it does look like the European Champions have made up their mind.
