If there's one former superstar the fans have been wanting to see make a return to the WWE, it's Rey Mysterio.

Thankfully, Mysterio departed on excellent terms with the company, which is why a comeback has always been speculated, and that talk has only accelerated this year.

RETURN

Mysterio returned during the Royal Rumble in January to a ridiculous reaction from the WWE fans, which was entirely different to the response he received back at the 2014 edition of the same event when he was the final entrant and was booed out of the arena.

Clearly, the reaction was slightly unfair as WWE fans wanted nobody else apart from Daniel Bryan to leave the victor, but it was Batista that managed to pick up the win.

Mysterio was also part of the Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and again, that had many believing that the WWE's continual use of the former WWE Champion is leading to another significant return.

Although, Mysterio still hasn't signed a new deal with the company right now while an injury is said to be the reason why he didn't return to WWE in April.

Mysterio is next set to feature at the Dominion event for New Japan Pro Wrestling, but Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has revealed the latest update on Mysterio's contract negotiations with WWE.

While it seems like both sides are stalling, he revealed on the latest issue of Wrestling Observer Newsletter that both sides are still in negotiations for Mysterio to come back for more appearances this year.

NEGOTIATIONS

Meltzer first noted on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Live that, as of one week ago, WWE and Mysterio still hadn't agreed to a deal, but they're still talking about it right now - so it's not dead and buried just yet.

According to Wrestling Inc, Meltzer also claimed that backstage officials feel that Mysterio is likely to return to WWE in September - after the SummerSlam pay-per-view in August - as he already has commitments for the summer which he wants to keep.

At the moment, it seems like a matter of when and not if Mysterio is going to come back.

He's always talking about the company in a positive light, while he also threw out an incredible suggestion recently on the storyline he could be featured in, should he go back.

With several notable Latin America stars on the roster, Mysterio admitted that creating a super stable with Sin Cara, Kalisto and Andrade 'Cien' Almas was something that interests him.

With the options there and the cards falling into place, it looks like September could be the month Mysterio is finally back in WWE.
