Despite what the numbers might suggest, last season was frustrating for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United.

He featured in 35 Premier League games for the Red Devils, scoring and assisting a respectable seven and five goals respectively.

Add to that three goals and one assist in eight Champions League appearances and it looks like Rashford had a decent individual season.

But his frustrations under Jose Mourinho became clear towards the tail end of the campaign, mainly due to a lack of starts.

Even when he was handed a start against Chelsea in the FA Cup final he failed to impress, as Martin Keown highlighted following England's 2-0 win over Costa Rica on Thursday.

Rashford scored a screamer in the 13th minute and Keown believes he thrives more under Gareth Southgate than Mourinho, which says a lot.

"Marcus Rashford was unrecognisable from the player who started the FA Cup final," wrote Keown for the Daily Mail.

RASHFORD BAGS FOR ENGLAND

"I do not want to be overly critical of Jose Mourinho but I imagine the environment is far better under Gareth Southgate than at Manchester United.

"Southgate cannot afford to be so cut-throat and ruthless and Rashford is clearly benefiting.

"This season, I have accused him of trying too hard to impress Mourinho. He seems to do everything at a million miles an hour.

"On Thursday night, he just did what was required. He chose the right moments to show his brilliance and skill."

Doubts have been raised over Rashford's future at United lately as a result of his reported frustrations and there could be a very surprising move for him on the horizon.

According to the Chronicle, which is an equivalent of Manchester Evening News, Rashford is a prime loan target for Newcastle United.

Rafa Benitez is a huge fan of the youngster and keen to make attacking reinforcements this summer. The move would make sense for all parties.

Rashford joining Newcastle on loan would guarantee him a starting role every week, while the Magpies would be signing a very exciting player with Premier League experience.

As for United, they already have Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial going forward and Mourinho is expected to sign another attacking player this summer.

Mourinho has previously insisted Rashford won't be leaving, be it on loan or permanently, but perhaps he should reconsider that stance to further his development.
