The wait is finally over for Simona Halep. She's been the world number one in the women's tennis rankings since last October, but a Grand Slam title is the one thing that has alluded her in career so far.Two French Open finals and one Australian Open final have been the closest she's come to claiming one of the four biggest prizes on the tennis calendar, and despite many thinking Serena Williams dominates the sport, there had been a different winner of all of the last six women's Grand Slam's before the latest French Open.Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens, Garbine Muguruza, Jelena Ostapenko, Williams and Angelique Kerber have all tasted Slam success in the last few years whilst Halep has had to settle for second best on more than one occasion.Today was the day she was waiting for though, as she triumphed over 2017 U.S. Open winner Stephens in three sets, proving to the world there is a reason why she tops the rankings.Of course, it could have all been different if Serena Williams didn't have to retire before her round of 16 match with Maria Sharapova, the American's first Grand Slam back since giving birth in September 2017.But you can take nothing away from Romanian superstar Halep. She got the better of two Slam winners in Kerber and Muguruza in the quarter and semi-finals, and she even lost the first set 6-3 to Stephens in the final at Roland Garros.Halep though recovered to take the second set 6-4, and at 3-0 up in the final set, she produced this absolutely stunning point to go just two games from securing her first Grand Slam.

Halep produced not one, but two fantastic returns at the net to seal the game, eventually being the victor of the final set 6-1 to take home the trophy and 1.12 million euro prize money.

An emotional Halep said after the victory: "I was dreaming for this moment since I've started to play tennis.

"When I was down a break in the second set I thought 'Everything is gone, I'm gonna start to relax and enjoy the match,' and I came back."

The 26-year old is clearly a popular figure on the women's tour, and a host of names took to social media to congratulate her on her success, including Britain's shining light Johanna Konta.

With Wimbledon just around the corner, Halep will be aiming to double her Grand Slam tally when she enters South West London, where her best finish has been a 2014 semi final defeat to Eugenie Bouchard.
