Yoel Romero has yet again missed weight for a UFC championship fight.

The Cuban initially missed weight this past February when he took on Luke Rockhold for the interim middleweight championship. Because Romero missed weight, he was ineligible from winning the interim championship.

Despite this, Romero went on to win the fight via third round knockout. As a result, Romero earned himself a crack at the undisputed 185-pound championship, which is currently held by Robert Whittaker.

It was announced that they would main event tonight (Sat. June 9, 2018) at UFC 225 on pay-per-view (PPV). Yesterday afternoon, however, what is expected to be the biggest card of the year hit a snag.

Missing Weight

Romero missed weight coming in at 186 pounds, one pound overweight for the strict 185 pound championship weight limit.

He was given two hours to cut the extra weight, but after hitting the scales the second time around, he still came in .2 pounds overweight.

Although the weight difference was extremely small, Romero was still considered overweight and it was announced the fight will no longer be for the middleweight championship.

During ceremonial weigh-ins last night, UFC commentator Joe Rogan interviewed Romero and asked him about his failed weight cut, and what exactly went wrong.

Romero made a rather interesting revelation, that will likely upset fans. It appears that despite being given two hours to cut the extra pound, the Illinois Athletic Commission stopped the Cuban after an hour of cutting and demanded he weigh-in earlier.

Not My Decision

As a result, Romero came in .2 pounds overweight and thinks he could've made weight if given the full two hours like initially promised (quotes via LowKickMMA):

‘You know, I missed the weight, you know what happened. The situation is very complicated. I don’t know why the commission stopped me.

"(Rogan chimes in with, ‘the commission stopped you with hours to go’). Yeah, I needed two hours and the commission would only give me one.

"And that’s what happened. I don’t know why the commission no give me two hours.”

Finally, Romero made it clear that the decision to stop the weight cut early was not his decision, and it was all on the commission:

“It was the commission’s decision.”

So yet again, an MMA event has been ruined thanks to the incompetence of an athletic commission that doesn't seem to know what in the world they're doing.
