Another year, another confusing transfer saga involving Liverpool.

Just two days ago the Reds looked certain to sign Nabil Fekir from Lyon for £53m. A medical had been completed and the Frenchman had even given an interview in Liverpool colours.

But then everything went to pot. On Saturday, Lyon released a statement claiming negotiations with Liverpool for Fekir had ended.

"Olympique Lyonnais informs that the negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded," it read.

"Olympique Lyonnais has decided to put an end to this negotiation tonight at 8pm.

"Olympique Lyonnais is delighted to be able to count on the presence of the captain for this season, during which the club will play the Champions League."

Lyon's sudden statement sparked widespread confusion - what could Liverpool have possibly done wrong to see the move scrapped?

LIVERPOOL'S TRANSFER NIGHTMARE

Bear in mind the Reds missed out on Virgil van Dijk last summer after being accused of tapping up the Dutchman by Southampton.

Reports from France soon suggested Lyon had ended talks because Liverpool tried to renegotiate a lower fee at the 11th hour due to concerns about Fekir's injury history.

Liverpool fans understandably reacted furiously to the news, but according to the Liverpool Echo, that wasn't the case at all.

It turns out the deal actually collapsed on Friday and Liverpool were the ones who pulled out after the results of the medical were revealed.

If that's the case then Jurgen Klopp made the right decision, because £53m is a lot to spend on a potentially injury-prone player.

Liverpool may have dodged a bullet, so now it's on to the next one.
