Liverpool fans were left waiting for a Nabil Fekir announcement that never came last week.

With the hashtag '#FekirFriday' going viral and positive reports rolling in, Kopites had every reason to think the Lyon midfielder was coming to Anfield. In fact, it's easy to get the impression that club officials probably thought the same thing as well.

Reports are claiming that Fekir had posed in a Liverpool shirt, carried out an interview with LFC TV and even chose his squad number for next season.

Nevertheless, at the last minute, the deal deteriorated amidst second opinions on a medical and financial complications.

On Saturday night, Lyon revealed: "Olympique Lyonnais informs that the tripartite negotiations with the Liverpool club and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded.

Liverpool lose out on Fekir

"Olympique Lyonnais is delighted soon to be able to count on the presence of the captain for this season 2018/2019, during which the club will play the Champions League."

As a result, Liverpool are having to look elsewhere for a replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

That isn't the only transfer business on the agenda at Anfield this summer, though, with the events of the Champions League final seeing a new goalkeeper become something of a priority.

Liverpool priced out of Alisson move

And amidst all the names linked with a move to Merseyside, Alisson is always involved.

Reports suggest that Liverpool see him as their priority between the sticks, although the likes of Jan Oblak and Bern Leno are also of interest.

However, Sky Sports dropped the bombshell on Monday that Liverpool are now 'unlikely' to make an approach for the Brazilian having baulked at his £80 million valuation.

A source told Sky that Alisson's likely destination is Real Madrid.

Chelsea are still believed to hold an interest in the AS Roma shot stopper but would only an approach if they lost Thibaut Courtois to Real.

Whether or not that'll take place is unknown, yet it seems certain now that Liverpool won't act upon their interest in Alisson, which can be traced back to February.

So, another major blow for Liverpool this week.

Jurgen Klopp will now have to look elsewhere if he wants an alternative to Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet between the sticks next season.

The Reds could struggle to buy a world-class goalkeeper given the budget with Oblak, for example, likely to command a similarly lofty fee to Alisson.

And quite how enthusiastic Liverpool fans are for a 'keeper like Jack Butland or Alex McCarthy is debatable.

Over to you, Jurgen - stick or twist?
