Marcus Rashford must be one of the very few Manchester United players who hanker for the days of Louis van Gaal.

The 20-year-old endured an incredibly frustrating season under Jose Mourinho, despite scoring 13 goals in all competitions.

Fortunately, his domestic situation doesn't seem to have affected his standing with Gareth Southgate and the World Cup in Russia is set to be huge for the forward.

Judging by his performance in the warm-up friendly against Costa Rica, when he scored a blinding goal and dazzled with some of his skills, United's Academy product will be giving Southgate a real headache over whether to start him ahead of Raheem Sterling.

If he shines in Russia, then it's likely he'll be attracting even more interest from clubs planning to exploit what has at times looked an uncertain future at Old Trafford.

However, The Sun report that whatever the feeling in Rashford's camp might be, United have now made a decision on what to do with him going forward.

Although Rashford still has two years to run on his current deal, it's claimed that when he gets back from the World Cup, the Red Devils plan to sit him down and offer him an extension.

And if and when he puts pen to paper, he will receive a very impressive £130,000 a week, amounting to a £50,000-a-week payrise.

How Rashford's representatives feel

Interestingly, the newspaper quote an inside source at United as telling them the following:

“The club want to sit down after the World Cup, even if his camp want to see what Jose does in the market.

“The club want to hike his money up once some of the higher earners are out of the door in the next few weeks.

“Rash wants to be put at ease and the club want to show him how highly they value him and that he has a long future here.”

That sort of contract would surely convince him that he's highly valued at the club he joined when he was just seven.

Reports have recently linked him with a move to Newcastle, which would make sense if Rashford were desperate for minutes on the pitch every week.

It shouldn't be understated, though, that he has a special attachment to United and this new deal is the best possible outcome for all parties right now.
