“We've spoken too much, it's time to get some work done.”

The words of Steven Gerrard after his first day working at Rangers’ training base on Wednesday as he continues the process of overhauling the squad ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

The 2018 World Cup finals get underway on Thursday but Gerrard is fully focused on getting everything ready at Ibrox for next season.

The Liverpool legend has already made five signings since his appointment was announced last month.

Alan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria, Connor Goldson and now Nikola Katic have all signed for the Scottish giants following Gerrard’s arrival.

Gerrard has been assigned the task of closing the gap on Celtic, who secured their seventh Scottish Premier League title this season.

But former Celtic striker John Hartson has delivered his honest opinion about Rangers’ chances of catching Celtic next term and it’s very hard to disagree with him.

Hartson gives his verdict on Rangers' chances next season

“They are making a lot of signings and they will have to continue making a few more signings,” he was quoted as saying by Eurosport. “Stevie is a class act and he will certainly make an impact in that dressing room.

“But Rangers’ biggest worry is getting above Aberdeen, never mind Celtic. It is inconceivable to finish above Celtic in terms of where they are on and off the pitch.

“They have had over £50million from the Champions League experiences in the last two years, they have assets, they have money in the bank, they are an incredible football team riding a crest of a wave and they have just achieved the double treble.

“There is a real feelgood factor around the place and every season ticket is already sold out so it is inconceivable that they are going to beat Celtic for the title.”

Hartson: Rangers should target finishing above Aberdeen

A blunt assessment of Rangers’ chances, perhaps, but there’s no denying the gap between Celtic and Gerrard’s new team is significant as things stand.

“I think realistically, their aim should be finishing above Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts; that should be their target,” Hartson added.

“I know the fans won’t think that way but they are nowhere near Celtic so they should be aiming to get above Aberdeen.

“Celtic will come back flying. Brendan is going to add to the team that he has got so it will be really interesting to see where it goes.”

It seems the bookmakers are in agreement with Hartson.

Celtic are currently 1/10 on to make it eight in a row next season.

Rangers, on the other hand, are around 12/1 to finish above their fierce Glasgow rivals.
