It's been a busy few days in the life of Julen Lopetegui.

The 51-year-old was unveiled as the new Real Madrid manager and the successor to Zinedine Zidane who resigned after three consecutive Champions League titles. With a World Cup campaign just days away, too, it looked the perfect week for Lopetegui.

However, that all changed on Wednesday when it was sensationally revealed that the Spanish FA had sacked Lopetegui and instated Fernando Hierro just two days before their opening game.

President Luis Rubiales insisted he had no option but to terminate his manager's contract after he negotiated the Real Madrid move behind their back.

He explained during a press appearance: “Julen has worked phenomenally well; I have nothing at all to complain about there. But the way that this has happened obliged me to take this decision.

Lopetegui named Real Madrid boss

"This is a very hard day and now we have decisions to make just two days before the World Cup starts.”

Ouch.

Just in case Lopetegui needed an added incentive to focus on Real Madrid, he's now been given one and the Spaniard will be completely focused on the job at hand at the Bernabeu.

Real to revive De Gea interest

And, according to the Daily Mail, the move will have quite the impact on the future of David de Gea.

Real Madrid's interest in De Gea is nothing new at all with the Manchester United goalkeeper almost completing a move during the dying hours of the 2015 summer transfer window.

Under the reign of Zidane, however, interest seems to have cooled.

Zidane isn't charge anymore, though.

The Mail revealed: "Lopetegui will be expected to see-in a new goalkeeper at the club and his excellent relationship with De Gea will see Real Madrid president Florentino Perez make another attempt at getting the 27-year-old keeper out of Old Trafford."

"His move to Madrid has been negotiated by Carlos Bucero, an agent known to work closely with Mendes who also represents De Gea."

In layman's terms, the arrival of Lopetegui means Real are interested in De Gea again.

While a summer move may seem somewhat ambitious, De Gea now has a clear route to the Spanish capital if proceedings stagnate at Old Trafford.

Lopetegui is believed to be unconvinced by the prospect of Keylor Navas as number one, amid links to other goalkeepers such as Alisson.

Jose Mourinho has previously expressed his desire to hold onto De Gea and it's unlikely that United would concede their player of the year without a fight.

Money talks, though, and Real are sniffing around again.
