It has been revealed this week that middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin had a back-up fight lined up with Billy Joe Saunders, in case the rematch with Canelo Alvarez didn’t materialise.

‘Triple G’ currently holds the WBA (Super), WBC and IBO middleweight titles, boasting a professional boxing record of 38 wins from 39, the only non-win coming in the contrevsersial draw against Canelo Alvarez last September.

The British Saunders currently holds the WBO middleweight title after defending the belt successfully three times. But Saunders, 28, pulled out of a title defence against fellow Brit Martin Murray which was scheduled for June.

Saunders claimed a hamstring injury caused him to pull out, but not all fight fans are convinced, with some speculating that he ‘invented’ the injury to boost the chances of a unification bout with the Khazakstani champ.

As if the first GGG/Alvarez bout didn’t offer us enough drama, their original rematch scheduled for the start of last month was delayed due to Alvarez producing failed drug samples – allegedly due to ‘contaminated meat’ eaten by Alvarez.

The rematch has finally been scheduled for September 15, but it wasn’t all that easy.

Canelo’s promotor Oscar De La Hoya announced the fight on social media earlier this week, but at first glimpse it looked to be dead in the water, with GGG allegedly demanding a grater share of the purse.

"We want the fight, Tom Loeffler wants the fight.

"Clearly the only person here who doesn't want the fight is GGG… We've come up and there’s no budge from him so there’s no fight, 100 per cent there is no fight" - Oscar De La Hoya."

As for Golovkin's side of things, his promoter has revealed that an agreement was in place for Triple G to fight Saunders.

"We definitely had an agreement in place with Billy Joe Saunders.

"I was up front with them and told them if there's a way to get the Canelo deal that was a priority but Gennady had no hesitation fighting Billy Joe Saunders because he felt it was a challenging fight to fight an undefeated champion.”

It's all about hype in boxing, and both parties have created that with this hype.

As for Saunders, though, he will have to wait for his chance to fight GGG, and possibly fit in another fight before hand to prove any doubters wrong.
