No Premier League club has made a more exciting start to the transfer window than Liverpool.

In the days that followed losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid, the Reds shocked everyone by signing Monaco's Fabinho for £44m.

It was a move no one saw coming. Reports surfaced of Liverpool's interest in the Brazil international on the evening of Monday 28 May and within an hour the deal was done.

Liverpool fans then quickly came to the realisation that Naby Keita is also on his way to Anfield, with the RB Leipzig man due to arrive on July 1.

But the excitement wasn't over. Later that week, Liverpool emerged as favourites to sign Nabil Fekir from Lyon and a few days later a £53m move had been agreed.

Everything seemed to be heading in the right direction, yet Lyon announced on Saturday that negotiations had ended and Fekir was staying put.

"Olympique Lyonnais informs that the negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded," the statement read.

THE SAGA CONTINUES...

"Olympique Lyonnais has decided to put an end to this negotiation tonight at 8pm.

"Olympique Lyonnais is delighted to be able to count on the presence of the captain for this season, during which the club will play the Champions League."

At that moment the dream seemed over for Liverpool fans, who had gotten very excited about the thought of adding Fekir to their midfield.

It's since been reported that nothing will happen until after the World Cup and now Sky Sports' Merseyside correspondent Vinny O'Connor has provided an interesting update.

O'Connor has been told that it would be "wrong to rule out" Fekir still joining Liverpool this summer and the Reds are still very much monitoring his situation at Lyon.

"What I was told the other day is it would be wrong to rule out definitely at this stage that Liverpool would never go back in for him," he said on Sky Sports' podcast 'Transfer Talk'.

"There is the World Cup to come, Liverpool can look at it, see how it goes at the World Cup and then re-visit it.

"What I did get out of Liverpool from an unofficial source is it is 'foot on the ball' during the World Cup but they are still looking to fill the vital creative areas as they want that extra spark."

It's not over, Liverpool fans. Stay tuned.
