There was a fascinating sub-plot to Egypt's World Cup opener against Uruguay.Liverpool fans will have been eagerly anticipating the chance to watch two different generations of Reds' heroes up against each other, with Group A pitting Mo Salah against Luis Suarez.Of course, the seven-time African champions only named Salah on the bench, preserving him as he continues his recovery from the shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League final. In the early stages, there was disappointment to be had for Suarez too, as he missed a glaring chance with 24 minutes on the clock - even if BBC commentators Jonathan Pearce and Martin Keown thought it was in, the shot hit the side netting. All in all, it was a strange atmosphere at the Ekaterinburg Stadium. There were empty seats aplenty - except in the very dodgy temporary stands, which were rocking - and Egypt supporters were just counting down the minutes until their star man might emerge from the bench. They are placing all their hopes on the 26-year-old, who celebrates his birthday today, and he even featured in a banner targeting Suarez.Nobody has forgotten the Barcelona striker's controversial history in this tournament and the crowd were keen to remind him of it, warning that this time around Salah would be his downfall.Take a look at the banner below:

In 2010, the 31-year-old broke Ghanaian hearts with a deliberate handball on the goal line to prevent Dominic Adiyiah from scoring in the last minute.

Suarez's World Cup history

Asamoah Gyan subsequently missed the resulting penalty and it was Uruguay who went through to the semi-finals.

However, that was arguably a lesser crime than what Suarez did in 2014, when he bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini.

Perhaps that just sums up the forward; it's impossible to overlook his talents, but it's equally difficult to forget some of his behaviour, especially at the World Cup.

Something was clearly irking him in the first half, when he looked completely off his game. Let's hope the banner didn't catch his eye.

How far do you think Uruguay will go in Russia? Have your say in the comments.
