Uruguay would have been confident of a win in their opening World Cup group game. The South American nation, with Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin in their starting line-up, were playing an Egypt side that was without Mohamed Salah. The Liverpool forward was named on the bench as he continues to recover from the shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League final. But any thought that Uruguay would cruise to victory were quickly put to bed. They struggled to break Egypt down until the 90th minute, when Jose Maria Gimenez headed home from a free-kick.It was an awful way for Egypt to lose the match given their performance.Football can be a cruel game at times.

Lineker's Suarez tweet

Gary Lineker was hosting the match, shown on BBC, and he was stunned by Suarez’s performance.

The Barcelona forward missed a glorious chance to score in the first half when he found the side netting from close range.

Suarez’s woes continued into the second period when Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy produced a smart stop to deny him.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Suarez, and he will hate what Lineker had to say on Twitter.

“Mo Salah has been better than Luis Suarez in this game,” Lineker wrote.

Ouch.

The joke is that, obviously, Salah didn’t even play.

Uruguay’s attacking duo of Cavani and Suarez found the net with ease for Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona respectively last season.

But if they can’t get it going in Russia, Uruguay’s hopes of playing up to their title of dark horses won’t last long.

Cavani hyped up Uruguay’s chances before the competition got underway.

"I think all Uruguayans have a good feeling because we have grown as a team, and also because we have shown a lot as a team," the striker told reporters, per FourFourTwo.

"People have recognised that over time.

“I think this good feeling is important because we can feel it from the pitch and sometimes that is what we need to give that little extra in certain moments."
