Jose Mourinho wants to improve his team greatly this summer, especially the centre-back position.

Victor Lindelof was brought in last summer but has failed to impress, while doubts linger around Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Eric Bailly is the most capable of the defenders currently at his disposal, but he fell out with the manager late on last season.

Mourinho has targeted Toby Alderweireld, but negotiations with Tottenham and Daniel Levy have been tough.

Some reports even suggest Tottenham are asking for £70 million for the defender, despite Alderweireld's contract only having one year left to run.

His comments while on international duty also seem as if he's putting his future on hold for now.

“I have no problem with that because I am 100% focused on Belgium,” he said. "I am focused on the World Cup, that’s all. There is nothing else on mind.”

The Independent are no reporting that Man United's move has run into complications, partly due to the Belgian's high demands.

So who will they target instead?

The report goes on to state that they are willing to make a move for Milan Skriniar from Inter Milan, with Mourinho remaining determined to add a centre-half in the transfer window.

The 23-year-old signed for the Italian giants for €20 million last summer after an impressive season with Sampdoria.

And he was an ever-present for Inter in the league this season as he played in all 38 games, scoring four times.

The Independent add that while Raphael Varane of Real Madrid remains a long-term target, Mourinho has increasingly been impressed by Slovakian international Skriniar.

However, there are a few problems surrounding a potential deal for the Slovakian international.

Firstly, Barcelona are said to be interested, meaning there will be big competition for Mourinho.

And secondly, Inter are reportedly want €80m for the 23-year-old, and have so far refused to even sit down with Barcelona.

It seems that if Mourinho desperately wants Skriniar as an alternative option to Alderweireld, he will have to spend a lot of money in order to make a deal happen.
