Jose Mourinho is bound to give us plenty of fascinating insights into the World Cup this summer.

The Manchester United manager is working as a pundit on Russia Today and unlike in his day job, he hasn't yet been saying anything too controversial.

Analysing Group A after Russia's 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia, the Portuguese reminded the hosts of the danger that Mo Salah will pose when they meet Egypt on Tuesday.

Naturally, the discussion of the Liverpool forward's importance to his country then led Mourinho to raise a point about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winners are looking to win the tournament with Argentina and Portugal respectively and both will likely need to be at their best if they are to lift the trophy.

Indeed, as Mourinho noted, there is more incentive than ever for the La Liga duo to triumph on the world stage, as this could well be their last opportunity.

“I am not saying the best players always make a difference, but they are the ones that can make a difference,” he said, per the Manchester Evening News.

“Everybody knows that for the last decade Messi and Ronaldo were the best players on the planet. They did amazingly well for their clubs. They try to give the best of themselves to their countries.

“I think they both arrive at this World Cup, probably as the last one.”

IS IT THEIR LAST CHANCE?

“Of course Cristiano, from a physical point of view, is a superman," he added.

"He can be there in Qatar if he wants, but four more years at the highest level, to come back to the next World Cup, I feel it will be hard.

“Lionel is younger and he can, perfectly possibly be in the next World Cup. But I also think that to play two or three matches every week – Barcelona, Real Madrid, La Liga, Champions League, national team - to resist all of that and arrive in four years at the highest level will be difficult."

With that in mind, Messi and Ronaldo will be well aware that what happens in the next few weeks could play a part in determining whether they go down in history as the Greatest Of All Time.

“They are going to both put everything they’ve got into this World Cup to try to finish their careers winning the only thing they don’t have," Mourinho reminded them.

“None of them is a world champion and the careers they are having as club players, to be world champion, would be the pinnacle of their careers.”

Ronaldo has at least won a major international tournament, helping his country to the European Championships in 2016 even if he missed the majority of the final through injury.

As for Messi, the one thing that for many sets Diego Maradona apart from him is that his compatriot led the Albiceleste to the Jules Rimet in 1986.

Only one of them, if either, can pull it off and it will likely have a huge impact on their legacies.
