It took Cristiano Ronaldo just four minutes to get himself on the scoresheet at this summer’s World Cup finals. The 33-year-old, playing in what could be his final World Cup, went down under a challenge from Real Madrid teammate Nacho and was awarded a penalty by Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi. It looked a soft penalty but the Video Assistant Referee agreed with Rocchi that it warranted a spot-kick.Ronaldo duly stepped up and converted past David de Gea.In the process, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner became the first player to score in eight consecutive major international tournaments. What made Ronaldo’s penalty all the more impressive was the wait he was faced to endure before the spot-kick.The Real Madrid icon remained composed, focused and the outcome was never really in doubt.

The Manchester United shot-stopper looked directly at Ronaldo and even squared up to him, but his opponent paid him no attention. Watch it here...

Ronaldo then scored again before half-time to make it 2-1 to Portugal.

And De Gea, of all people, was the man who made the mistake.
