One of the most important storylines of the NBA offseason involves Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs.

Although the quad injury that held Leonard out for all but nine regular-season contests was quite complex and confusing, the friction that brewed between the player and his team was pretty simple to understand.

Leonard, who is up for a $219 million super-max extension this summer, most likely felt like he was rushed back onto the court and wanted to make sure he felt 100 percent comfortable on his leg after playing limited minutes in two different stints during the regular season. Although his will to compete and his relationship with his teammates certainly could be questioned due to his decision to leave the team to train with his own group in New York City, his entire career (and financial future) is riding on his quad returning to full health.

On the other hand, the Spurs didn’t appreciate Leonard’s absence, especially in their opening-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors. Rumored to be progressing in his recovery, the former third-place MVP voter didn’t return to his club, which hurt since Stephen Curry missed that entire series for the Warriors. They probably also didn't appreciate that Leonard essentially ignored their medical staff and got a second opinion on the ailment.

Although Leonard and Gregg Popovich were scheduled to sit down and meet sometime in the next couple weeks, it appears as though Leonard has already made up his mind about where he wants to end up.

According to Chris Haynes of ESPN, Leonard wants out of San Antonio.

He’s had enough

“Leonard, according to sources, has grown frustrated with how the organization handled his quad injury and feels the franchise turned on him once he sought a second opinion,” Haynes reported. “Leonard has Los Angeles -- preferably the Lakers -- at the center of his preferences for a trade destination, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.”

As of Friday, the gap between the two sides was simply too far apart to close.

“There's a feeling of betrayal that, at this juncture, appears irreparable; Leonard isn't concerned about missing out on the supermax,” wrote Haynes.

Interestingly, the Spurs most likely know about Leonard’s feelings and could be working on the framework of a trade right now.

“Leonard has communicated with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich in recent days, sources say, but the two have yet to speak in person. … Popovich has been out of town all week attending to family business, sources told ESPN's Michael C. Wright. But Popovich and Leonard have reached out to each other on numerous occasions in recent weeks,” Haynes reported.

The Lakers, who were reported to be one of Leonard’s preferred destinations, as well as the Celtics, are expected to go after Leonard.

It’s important to note that Popovich and the Spurs are not obligated to trade him. If you recall, LaMarcus Aldridge had one foot out the door last summer and asked for a trade, but Pop refused. Aldridge then had one of the best seasons of his career and is now seemingly happy in San Antonio.

Although the asking price will be sky-high for Leonard, the Spurs will most likely have a number of offers to sort through. But, there's no guarantee they'll execute one of them.
