It's unlikely that the 2018 World Cup will produce another game as good as Spain's 3-3 draw with Portugal.Cristiano Ronaldo became just the fourth player in history to score at four different World Cups, following in the footsteps of Brazil's Pele and German pair Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose. The 33-year-old is the only player to have scored in eight consecutive major international tournaments. In the second half, it looked like a race between the Real Madrid star and Diego Costa for a hat-trick, but the Atletico Madrid striker was then taken off while still on a brace. The rest is history. Ronaldo claimed his third goal with a phenomenal free-kick. He's scored some screamers from set pieces over the years - ones against Portsmouth and Arsenal spring to mind - but this was right up there with his best. From the fourth minute when he scored the penalty, it was obvious it was going to be CR7's night, which made him a hot topic of discussion in the BBC studio at half-time.The panel were praising his first half, which saw his score twice, have three shots, win three aerial duels, with Rio Ferdinand saying: "He shoots more often than anyone else."Alan Shearer judged that as the perfect opportunity to joke about the one aspect of his game that needed work."He's got to improve his free-kicks though," the former England striker jested.

It came back to bite him

It may have been tongue in cheek, but Twitter can be a cruel place and many fans were quick to remind Shearer of what he'd said once Ronaldo's free-kick had nestled into the top corner:

Shearer must have seen that coming, as at full-time, he reminded us all of the statistic that this was, in fact, Ronaldo's first goal from a free-kick at a major tournament.

Shearer tried to back-track after the game

"One or two will ask why I said at half-time that Ronaldo needs to work on free kicks," he added.

"Well, it's his 45th attempt at major championships - and he's done it today.

"His second goal was due to a very rare De Gea mistake. Ronaldo takes a gamble to his right, but it should have been a basic save."

It's true that the second goal was a little fortuitous, but credit to the Portuguese nonetheless for taking the shot on, even if it really should have been stopped.

Aside from that, nobody had anything but good things to say about the five-time Ballon d'Or winner after one of his best performances to date - and that's saying something.
