It's seldom that David de Gea can be accused of costing his team, but his error on Friday night helped Portugal to a 3-3 draw with Spain. For many, the Manchester United stopper is the best in the world in his position and his blunder was completely out of character.Cristiano Ronaldo fired a relatively tame shot goalward, yet the ball somehow slipped through the number one's hands and into the net.De Gea has saved his country countless times in the past, so they'll forgive him the slip-up - it's just frustrating that it came in their opening game of the World Cup.La Roja's manager Fernando Hierro, who took over from Julen Lopetegui earlier this week, publicly backed the 27-year-old in his post-match press conference.“We know that goalkeeper is a special position, with a special psychology, and we have no doubts about him at all. None," he said.“We’re a team. We’re a family and we will not leave anyone aside. We don’t have the slightest doubt about any member of the family.”That's exactly the spirit Hierro will need to instil in this squad given the turbulent circumstances in which they've found themselves over the last few days.

Ramos shows his leadership

It was on display too in Sergio Ramos' tweet to his goalkeeper, with the Real Madrid centre-back urging his team-mate not to be downhearted.

The defender wrote: "It's not about not being wrong, it's about never giving up. It's not about never failing, it's about never giving up. On my team always, @D_DeGea. Always on my team. We continue! / Let's keep it up."

It was much appreciated by De Gea too, who replied:

Fortunately for De Gea, it wasn't only on social media that Spain's players had his back as Diego Costa's brace and Nacho's impressive strike ensured they still got a point to start off their Group B campaign.

The 2010 champions still played some very decent football, despite many being sceptical about their chances in the light of the Lopetegui affair.

If they are to go far in the competition, though, they will need their stopper back to his best quickly, starting with the Iran game on Wednesday.
