Rory Mcllroy endured another disappointing US Open, failing to make the cut for the third consecutive time.

Despite now having failed to advance to the weekend's action for the fifth time in the 10 attempts at the tournament, Mcllroy has refused to be too negative about his form.

Explaining the reason behind his early exit, the Holywood-born golfer attributed his result to one factor - the windy conditions on day one.

“I felt like my game was good coming in here,” he said, as per Bunkered.

“I think I was just blown away by the wind yesterday. That was the thing. I haven't played in wind like that for quite a long time. I just felt like I couldn't hit it far enough left or right to allow for the wind.”

He added: “It's a tough tournament. I have prepared well here in the last few years. I come in here with the right attitude. Even after yesterday, I felt like I could come in and shoot in the 60s and make it to the weekend. The first 27 holes for me were obviously what did it.”

Despite making a 10-shot improvement on his opening round at Shinnecock Hills, covering the back nine in just 31 shots in a second-round 70 on Friday, the damage had been done by an 80 on Thursday and a front nine of 39.

U.S. Open - Round Two

However, Mcllroy wasn't the only big name player to miss out, with the likes of Jordan Spieth (9+), Tiger Woods (10+), Jason Day (12+), Sergio Garcia (14+) and John Rahm (15+) perhaps providing further evidence for Mcllroy's claims.

The prestigious tournament continues this weekend with Dustin Johnson looking to convert his four-shot lead into a historic US Open victory, which will see him become the first player to win the US Open title the week after winning on the PGA Tour.
