Jack Wilshere's 17 year association with Arsenal is in serious doubt.

The midfielder joined the club as a nine-year-old, and has progressed through the youth teams into the first team squad.

He was once considered a wonderkid, after breaking into the first team aged 16, but his career has not materialised as hoped.

Wilshere has suffered numerous injuries which have curtailed his progress as a footballer.

Although he has been active in the first team this season, after making 38 appearances, Arsenal have seemed reluctant to extend his contract, which runs out this summer.

Arsene Wenger expressed his hope that the 26-year-old puts pen to paper, but he has now been replaced by Unai Emery as manager.

The Spaniard was set to meet Wilshere during mid-week to discuss the midfielder's future, and it has now been revealed what he told the midfielder.

And it doesn't look good for Wilshere.

According to the Mirror, Emery told Wilshere he is not a key figure in his plans.

Emery made it clear he wants to keep him - but that he may not be a guaranteed starter.

Emery extended Granit Xhaka's contract yesterday, while it looks likely that Lucas Torreira will join the club, pushing Wilshere further down the pecking order.

That will come as a huge blow to Wilshere, who is desperate to stay, but may not be content in fulfilling a fringe role at his boyhood club.

The two parties had actually agreed a deal, believed to be £110,000-per-week, plus a £65,000 bonus if he plays and the team wins, but Emery's words means Wilshere looks likely to leave the club.

Wilshere will have no shortage of clubs interested in him if he wants to leave.

Wolves, West Ham and Everton are among the Premier League teams that have offered deals, while there are also good offers from numerous Italian clubs, including Juventus and AC Milan.

If Wilshere wants to play regularly, it seems he will have no choice but to change clubs for the first time in 17 years.
