After Cristiano Ronaldo's majestic hat-trick for Portugal in their 3-3 draw against Spain on Friday night, the pressure was on Lionel Messi to produce something equally as special against Iceland. But while Ronaldo had a blinder, Messi had a shocker. The Argentine was often frustrated by a resilient Iceland defence as he found goal-scoring opportunties few and far between. He had a golden opportunity to put his country in front after they were awarded a penalty, but his tame spot-kick was easily saved by Iceland's goalkeeper, Hannes Þór Halldórsson. That was the fourth penalty Messi has missed in his last seven attempts for Argentina and Barcelona. And it proved costly, as Jorge Sampaoli's side could not find a winner, meaning the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw.Ian Wright was in the stands for the match, and he produced a hilarious reaction to Messi's penalty.Like many of us, Wright was expecting the 30-year-old to bury his effort from 12 yards, and thus got his camera out to record the moment. And the result is genius. That was pretty much everyone's reaction when Halldórsson managed to stop Messi's penalty. The facial expressions Wright made were just gold. And football fans on Twitter were in hysterics over Wright's video.
The draw is not catastrophic for Argentina, although they would have been hoping for a win against arguably the weakest team in Group D.
La Albiceleste will now have to produce two good performances against both Nigeria and Croatia if they want to keep their hopes of winning their third World Cup title alive.
