Leo Messi had a match to forget as Argentina kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Iceland.

Sergio Aguero scored a brilliant opener for La Albiceleste in the 19th minute before Alfred Finnbogason equalised for the minnows just four minutes later.

Messi missed a penalty in the second-half and took 11 shots as Argentina failed to break down a resolute Icelandic defence.

Meanwhile, Messi's rival Cristiano Ronaldo scored an incredible hat-trick for Portugal in a 3-3 draw against Spain on Friday night.

"They both arrive at this World Cup probably as the last one," said Jose Mourinho on RT. "It would be the pinnacle of their careers."

"They're both going to try to finish their careers with the only thing they don't have."

Both Portugal and Argentina started their World Cup campaigns with a draw.

Aguero on Messi

Messi looked heartbroken after missing the crucial penalty but has received some encouraging words from his close friend.

They badly need him back to his best for their upcoming games against Croatia and Nigeria.

"Leo showed he's human," said Aguero, as per ESPN. "We support him.

"He just had a bad day but we know that he can give us the victory at any moment of the game.

"I hope he can be better for next match against Croatia."

He's totally spot on - Messi showed in their World Cup qualifying campaign that he possesses the ability to single-handedly take Argentina to victory.

Aguero continued: "The first match is always the most difficult. Everyone wants to play against us.

"They were defending, their only chances to score were from a set piece or looking for the second play. I think they celebrated the draw as a victory."

Iceland will fancy their chances of repeating their Euro 2016 heroics after a positive result against the group favourites.

They famously knocked out England in the Round of 16 in France before losing to the hosts in the quarter-finals.
