Those who watch the Premier League on a regular basis aren’t used to seeing a David de Gea mistake. So it was a major surprise when the Manchester United goalkeeper made an awful error in Spain’s 3-3 draw against Portugal in the World Cup.The 27-year-old let a shot from Cristiano Ronaldo slip through his fingers and into the net just minutes before half-time.De Gea posted a message of defiance on Twitter after his mistake, writing on Twitter: “To learn to succeed, first you have to learn to fail.”He’s also received a comforting message of support from Sergio Ramos.“It's not about not being wrong, it's about never giving up,” the Real Madrid centre-back tweeted.“It's not about never failing, it's about never giving up. On my team always, @D_DeGea. Always on my team. We continue! / Let's keep it up."

Spain fans have reacted

You get the sense that De Gea has already moved on and is focussed on Spain’s next match, which comes against Iran on Wednesday.

But back in Spain, fans and the media are still talking about the No.1 - and the message isn’t of sympathy.

AS have conducted a poll that asked fans: ‘Which ‘keeper would you pick to start for Spain against Iran?’

A total of 39,917 fans responded, and 49.8 per cent of them said Kepa Arrizabalaga should be between the sticks on Wednesday.

De Gea earned 38.4 per cent of the votes and 11.8 per cent voted for Pepe Reina.

Arrizabalaga, 23, was linked with a move to Real Madrid before he signed a new contract at Athletic Bilbao that expires in 2025.

He’s only made one appearance for Spain but fans clearly believe now is the time to thrust him into the spotlight.

Yet it’s hard not to feel that they have been a little rash.

De Gea is among the finest ‘keepers in the sport - Rio Ferdinand called him “outright the best goalkeeper in the world” in February - and there’s bound to come a point in the tournament when he produces a moment that defies belief.

Fortunately for De Gea, he has the support of the only person whose opinion matters: Spain’s interim coach, Fernando Hierro.

"He's one of us; we have no doubts about him," Hierro said after the Portugal draw.
