The wait is finally over!

The highly anticipated mega-fight between two giants of the middleweight division in Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez is set to take place on September 15 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Exactly 365 days since the first bout, the duo will again battle it out inside the ring as Triple G puts his WBA [Super], WBC and IBO belts on the line.

A lot of drama has surfaced since the conclusion of the first fight, as it was expected the rematch would happen on May 5 this year, only to be cancelled as Canelo tested positive twice for clenbuterol, leaving Golovkin to consider other options.

He fought Vanes Martirosyan on Cinco de Mayo and registered an emphatic win on that night.

According to Tom Loeffler, the pair are unwilling to come across each other apart from the press conferences and weigh-in, which are mandatory for the promotion of the bout.

Apart from that, a meeting for an HBO ‘Face Off’ or ‘Gloves are Off’ programs are seemingly unlikely this time around.

The major reason for that being the bad blood shared between them since the revelation of the Mexican’s positive tests which has angered Golovkin further after the results of the first fight.

An estimated 1.3 million pay-per-view buys and a $27 million gate was generated from their clash one year ago and experts are predicting the sequel to cross the $40million mark.

Loeffler believes the Kazakhstani boxer won’t leave it to the judges to decide the outcome of the fight scheduled in the upcoming months as he did not agree with the scoring, especially by two of the judges, deeming it as he was robbed of another victory.

He said: “Triple G isn’t going to leave it to chance in the hands of three judges, so we’re going to see more fireworks.

“I can’t go into details, but suffice it to say Triple G got what he was looking for or else he wouldn’t have agreed.”

As per Triple G, Canelo needs the fight with him to regain the loss suffered in terms of his image among his fan base, while being under strict vigilance of the anti-doping committee.

“He feels that Canelo really needs him to rehabilitate his image,” Loeffler continued.

“If Canelo had fought anyone else, it would have never rehabilitated his image. Canelo is now under strict VADA testing, and the only way Canelo can now rehabilitate his image is by fighting GGG.

“Now that Canelo has tested positive, it’s definitely a huge blow to his image and to his fan base and now the burden is on him to prove that he can fight at that same level as he did in the first fight now that he’s under the strict testing of VADA and to prove that there’s no illegal substances in his body.

“Even if Canelo loses this fight, his image will be much better because his fan base will respect him for taking the fight and not going a different route by taking a much easier fight than Triple G.”

Many are also questioning if the 27-year-old had the banned substance in his body during their first contest which enhanced his performance against the unified champion.

The boxing faithful have to wait for only three more months when all talks will be sidelined and actions will speak louder than words inside the venue in Las Vegas.
