It's no secret that the majority of fans that attend WWE's events really don't like Roman Reigns, and the situation isn't helped when he's paired opposite somebody equally as disfavoured in Jinder Mahal.
On the surface, it's evident what the WWE is trying to do.
After multiple failed attempts at trying to get The Big Dog cheered, not even a feud with The Modern Day Maharaja has been enough for the fans to begin cheering for the former Shield member. Then again, if teaming with Seth Rollins isn't working, then a rivalry with Mahal certainly isn't going to do the trick.
The WWE made the wise decision not to do what they did at Backlash by having Reigns feature in the main event ahead of other important matches. However, that didn't stop the notorious Chicago crowd from causing havoc during his match against Mahal.
It's no secret that the Chicago fans are some of the most vocal, and a loud 'CM Punk' chant is pretty much a guarantee whenever the WWE rolls into town. This time, though, there wasn't just one chant that was echoing throughout the arena.
The interesting thing to note about what the fans have revealed on social media is that the chants and actions below are only some of the things they could make out when watching the event - there might still be some things which were chanted which fans couldn't quite make.
So, it comes as no surprise why some have deemed it unacceptable while others believe it's a perfect example of how poor this feud has been.
Some of the chants included:
'This is awful!'
'Let's go Cena, Cena sucks!'
'Ole! Ole! Ole!'
'The Elite, The Elite!'
'Let's go beachball!'
Obviously, fans that pay for their tickets are free to chant for whichever star they want. However, the frustration is visible when fans make it their mission to ensure the rest of the arena turns on Reigns, and even referee Charles Robinson had his say on the matter.
He tweeted: "For as great a town that Chicago is for wrestling (one of the best ever), it is really disappointing that they can be so disrespectful when guys like @JinderMahal and @WWERomanReigns are busting their butts and giving us a great match."
Robinson later added, “Not really the talents fault how they are booked. Last I heard they don’t book themselves. Just trying to make the best of the situation they are put into. Just talking about the level of effort the talent puts into it.”
While they were certainly keeping themselves entertained, it does speak volumes about this feud, but perhaps the fans did go too far as well.
