Fernando Alonso has set his sights on the Indianapolis 500 after winning at Le Mans on Sunday.

A victory for the Spaniard in Indiana would secure him the motorsport triple crown and make him only the second man in history to achieve the feat.

Englishman Graham Hill is the only man to have won the trio of motorsport's biggest races, having completed the achievement with a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1972.

Alongside the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indy 500, the third leg of the triple crown is victory at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix.

Alonso took consecutive victories at the Monte Carlo in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, but has since struggled in the city-state.

He missed last year’s race as he mounted his first attempt on the Indy 500, which ended with a 29th-place finish after an engine failure.

With the two races expected to clash again next season, some have speculated that he may look to leave F1 at the end of the year in order to focus entirely on the IndyCar series.

"I will make my mind up after the summer what I will do next year, but after winning Le Mans, Indy comes into play with a high priority," said Alonso after victory on Sunday.

"Let's see if it is next year or the following year. Let's see what the future of F1 will be.”

He went on to describe the triple crown as a “very attractive target”, stating that victories across the three events would demonstrate his completeness as a driver.

In the meantime, Alonso plans to see out the rest of the F1 season with McLaren-Renault, whilst also balancing a continuing challenge for the World Endurance Championship with Toyota.

Whereas the Spaniard sits well off the pace in seventh in the F1 title race, he sits in first place - alongside teammates Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima - after two races in the World Endurance Championship.
