Back in May, Stephen Thompson and Darren Till met in the main event of UFC Fight Night 130 in Liverpool.

It was originally supposed to be a welterweight fight, but the bout was negotiated to catchweight after Till missed his required weight.

As if failing to make the weight wasn’t bad enough, part of the deal meant that The Gorilla had to forfeit 30% of his purse as well.

THE FIGHT

Despite the less than ideal preparation, the fight went the distance, with both men lasting five rounds.

It was Till who won by unanimous decision in his hometown, with the Liverpudlian up 48-47, 49-46, 49-46 on all the judges scorecards.

To make things worse for Thompson, who was beaten that night, he is now sidelined for eight weeks after picking up an injury inside the Octagon.

INTENTIONAL INJURY?

Wonderboy tore his MCL in the fight - and he believes that Till was intentionally trying to injure him throughout their bout, by targeting his knee with repeated side strikes.

“You know I tore my MCL in the fight with Till,” Thompson told BJ Penn.com

“We did an MRI and thankfully nothing else was damaged. No surgery is required for this injury but I have to give it at least eight weeks to heal properly before I can get back to training.”

BANNING THE MOVE

Clearly still upset with how his opponent acted, Thompson went on to suggest that side kicks to the knee should be banned from UFC altogether.

“I honestly think that strike should be made illegal, it could end somebody’s career,” he said, before questioning how different fighters use it.

"It is just a very dangerous technique. I think a lot of fighters throw that strike but sometimes it is for different reasons.

"When I fought Jorge Masvidal he used that same side kick to the knee. But when Jorge threw it, he was doing so just to keep me away. Not in an attempt to injure my knee."

This is arguably fine, but according to the American, Till was doing it in an attempt to break his leg.

"When I was in the cage fighting Till it felt like ok this guy is trying to break my leg. It was like he had intentions of ripping everything out in my knee.

"That’s how I felt anyway. Like this dude is really trying to injure me in here. I think it's an ugly strike and that it should be made illegal.”
