WBO interim featherweight champion Carl Frampton has revealed his opponent for his dream fight in his hometown of Belfast, at Windsor Park on August 18 will be undefeated Australian featherweight, Luke Jackson.
A victory for Frampton will probably propel him into a title fight with full champion Oscar Valdez, after an impressive unanimous decision win over Filipino-American Nonito Donaire saw him take the interim title in April 2018.
In the press conference announcing the fight, Frampton was asked why long-term rival Scott Quigg was not named the opponent instead of the relatively unknown Jackson.
Quigg was bested by Frampton in their first matchup back in February of 2016 but believes that he can beat the Jackal in a rematch.
And Quigg was one of the fighters to raise his hand after The Jackal beat Donaire, as Frampton contemplated his next move.
Quigg told MEN Sport back in May. "I know Frampton is without an opponent for August 18, and I'd be more than ready to fight him."
"None of the world champions are available apart from Gary Russell Jr, and I don't think Frampton would go near him.
"Other than that, I don't see anybody else that could make it a big enough fight to generate excitement.”
However, when asked at today's press conference why Quigg wasn't considered at today's press conference, Frampton took the opportunity to fire another shot at his old rival.
"People think he deserves the fight, he doesn't. I beat him and I never really got out of first gear," the 31-year-old said.
"It was a boring fight, the atmosphere in the arena was great because of my fans, I brought over 15,000 over to Manchester, he had fans because of the fight.
“Scott Quigg doesn’t have the support or the fan base. He lost his last fight pretty convincingly and doesn't deserve another fight.”
Frampton will be hoping Jackson will be the last hurdle he faces before getting a title fight against Valdez.
