After four years of waiting, England returned to World Cup action against Tunisia and what a start they made.Jesse Lingard forced goalkeeper Mouez Hassen into a superb opening stop, before Raheem Sterling narrowly missed from close range and the linesman spared his blushes.Tunisia couldn't hold on for much longer with Harry Kane tapping home after Hassen made a stunning save from John Stones' header. However, an equaliser arrived soon after when Kyle Walker conceded a penalty and Ferkani Sassi proceeded to score past Jordan Pickford.Just minutes after and England pressed again with Lingard spurning a great chance on the volley and seeing the post deny him one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Harry Kane opened the scoring

In truth, England should have led by three or four goals by half-time but the BBC pundits still had plenty of praise for the Three Lions at the break.

And Alan Shearer picked up on England's effectiveness from set pieces and, in particular the role of Kane.

Shearer on Kane from corners

He explained: "They've got four players on the edge of the box, what Gareth has told his player is: 'put the ball on the spot because we've got guys who can get on the end of it.

"We lined up again, Tunisia not marking, John Stones with a terrific header, the keeper makes a terrific save but Harry Kane was there.

"And you know what happens when you have your goalscorer in the box instead of taking corners like two years ago? That happens.

"So they've work at that, on the training ground, that's putting the ball on the penalty spot and saying: 'do you stuff and get on the end of it'

"That's two corners and there could have been two goals."

Kane in the box, brilliant stuff.

Roy Hodgson was heavily criticised for ordering the Tottenham striker to take corners at Euro 2016 and the move looks even sillier now.

It took just 11 minutes to show why you need Kane lurking in the six yard box and not standing by the flag.

England fans on Twitter

Many England fans had picked up on this on Twitter, too, firing no end of jokes in Hodgson's direction.

However, at the time of writing, England could do with another close range finish from Kane to ensure they get off to the desired start in Russia.
