On September 15, the eyes of the boxing world will be on Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin - as the pair will meet in their long-awaited rematch.

It will be literally a year to the day since the world's top two middleweights last met - that was on September 16, 2017.

And that, as we all know, ended in a controversial split draw.

Canelo vs GGG 1

After 12 rounds, most observers agreed that "GGG" had just edged a very tight match and two of the final three judges scorecards weren't massively disputed.

The cards read 113–115 in favour of Golovkin, 114–114 and 118–110 in favour of Alvarez - and it was the final one that was subject to ridicule from fans and the media alike.

Due to the controversial outcome of the bout, a rematch was originally scheduled for May 5, but that didn't happen after Canelo was tested positive for Clenbuterol, a banned substance, in March.

He was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for six months - and it looked like the fight was off - until recently.

CANELO vs GGG 2

Alvarez's suspension was retroactive from the date his first positive test was collected - which was on February 17, 2018. That means his six-month ban ends on August 17.

And just last week, it was confirmed that Canelo and GGG had finalized negotiations to hold a rematch in September.

The fight will now go ahead the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, in front of an expected crowd of around 20,000.

EARLY BETTING ODDS

Now that it has been made official, many bookmakers have already set their odds for the big fight. And early on, there's already one clear favourite.

Per Bovada, It's Golovkin who comes in as the early favourite at -190, while Canelo is currently around the +155 underdog line.

This shouldn't come as too much of a shock, as it was the fighter from Kazakhstan who went into the first fight as the favourite ahead of his Mexican challenger.

And, as Alvarez will be coming off the back of a long suspension, it's not clear how well prepared he will be, while Golovikin on the other hand, should be on top form. But only time will tell.
