David de Gea didn't exactly cover himself in glory during Friday's blockbuster match between Spain and Portugal.

In amongst the drama of the crazy 3-3 draw, the Manchester United goalkeeper dropped an uncharacteristic clanger just before half-time.

He gifted Cristiano Ronaldo his second goal of the game when he failed to hold a central and relatively tame shot at goal.

He couldn't have done anything about the penalty nor the free-kick, yet his culpability for that second goal saw him come in for serious criticism in Spain.

You would think that De Gea - arguably the best goalkeeper in the world - would be forgiven for that one error but Spanish supporters haven't been so forgiving.

Spain fans want De Gea out

Perhaps encouraged by the fact De Gea made a mistake in a pre-tournament friendly, too, almost 40,000 fans voted for Kepa Arrizabalaga to start between the sticks for the Iran game.

Nearly 50% of the voters felt that Arrizabalaga was the better option to De Gea.

And while the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper is brilliant option to have, it may seem strange to English football fans that he could be drafted in over De Gea.

Casillas makes key Ronaldo point

Nevertheless, manager Fernando Hierro and numerous players have come out in support of the United 'keeper amid all the criticism.

The latest big name to react has been Iker Casillas and who better to judge than a Spanish goalkeeper with 167 caps to his name?

And, as someone who played alongside Ronaldo for so many years, he had a very important point to make.

"For making a small mistake, he shouldn't be put in the eye of the storm," Casillas noted.

"Cristiano has a stinging shot - he strikes the ball very cleanly - especially with his left foot.

"It was a quick move and maybe the ball suddenly changed direction.

"The third goal was tremendous - pure quality. It was practically unstoppable. Cristiano's the main man for Portugal".

Debate it all you like, few men know better than Casillas.

There's no question that De Gea dropped a major error in the game, but the circumstances mean there shouldn't be too much of an overreaction.

Exactly how De Gea will fare against Iran and Morocco remains to be seen yet they'll certainly be nerves after the Portugal mistake.

Almost everybody has come out in support of him - apart from the fans - and he need to prove that they're correct for keeping the faith.

Over to you, David.
