Back in April, Baker Mayfield was taken as the number one overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft. The 23-year-old was drafted by the Cleveland Browns - and now looks to help turn the team's fortunes around.

STRUGGLES IN CLEVELAND

Over the past few years, things haven't gone to plan in Cleveland. Actually, to say that would be an understatement.

In 2017, they finished with a record of 0-16, becoming only the second franchise in NFL history to lose all of their 16 games.

Despite coming off the back of an awful year, as usual, there's been a lot of hype around the Browns so far in this offseason.

And that might partly be down to the arrival of Mayfield and some of his new teammates.

COMPETITION FOR POSITION

General manager John Dorsey has made some impressive signings ahead of the 2018 season - most notably, in the quarterback position.

Along with Mayfield, the Browns have also acquired Tyrod Taylor in a trade with the Buffalo Bills. It's expected that the rookie will push the veteran for a starting place in 2018.

However, according to some reporters, Mayfield is not yet ready to compete for the starting spot.

EARLY CRITICISM

According to local Cleveland journalist Dan Labbe, the number one pick isn't "ready to compete" with Taylor to become the Browns' starting QB.

In fact, following that revelation, Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports sent out a tweet not just criticising Mayfield for struggling to compete, but also for going as the first overall pick in the draft.

"Marginal size and athleticism isn’t a NUMBER ONE pick. In any draft. In any sport," Cowherd wrote.

Unsurprisingly, he received a fair amount of backlash from football fans, who have been calling out his logic - drawing comparisons to legends like Russell Wilson, Drew Brees and Eli Manning.

And if causing a little Twitter storm wasn't bad enough, Cowherd also caught the attention of Mayfield, who personally responded to the tweet.

BAKER'S RESPONSE

Quoting the message, Mayfield simply wrote "well it happened bud. Have a nice day!"

Arguably, not giving Cowherd the satisfaction of an argument in this instance is a much better way to go than rising to his controversial opinion.

After all, it's already happened and Mayfield will have to embrace the tag of being the number one draft pick. But it's up to him now to do his talking on the pitch and help the Browns improve on their 0-16 2017 season.
