With five Ballon d’Or each, an almost identical goalscoring record and countless trophies during their career, it’s no wonder the Lionel Messi/Cristiano Ronaldo argument rages on.Ahead of the World Cup, it’s probably fair to say there were more football fans that believed Messi was ‘better’ than Ronaldo. However, with both superstars looking to crown their career with World Cup glory, many believed that what happened in Russia could finally determine the Messi/Ronaldo debate. If that’s the case, Cristiano is well on his way to eclipsing Messi. The Real Madrid star scored a hat-trick in Portugal’s opening World Cup match against Spain.A day later, Messi missed a penalty and was fairly anonymous as Argentina draw 1-1 with Iceland. Then, in Portugal's second match against Morocco, Ronaldo bagged his fourth goal of the tournament as they triumphed 1-0.Messi will have to produce a magical performance against Croatia on Thursday night to emerge from Cristiano’s shadow during this tournament. But some still believe Messi is better than Ronaldo. One of those people is Gary Lineker. After Ronaldo scored an early header against the Moroccans, Lineker tweeted: “Ronaldo is utterly relentless in his pursuit of goal scoring greatness. What a player.”

But when asked why he’ll never admit Ronaldo is better, Lineker had the perfect reply.

He wrote: “You want me to say something I don’t believe? You could argue that Ronaldo is the greater goal scorer even though their numbers are similar, but there is no contest when it comes to who is the best footballer. Ronaldo is prolific, Messi is joyous.”

Well said, Gary.

Ronaldo may already be running away with the World Cup Golden Boot during this tournament but there is more to football than just goals.

And Messi has provided us with magical moments throughout his career and the whole debate with Cristiano shouldn’t be defied by this tournament alone.
