The boxing world was sad to see Billy Joe Saunders pull out of his world title defence vs Martin Murray.

The two British fighters were scheduled to meet on June 23, but Saunders pulled out after sustaining an injury in training.

Murray took to social media to question the legitimacy of the injury and he now has a new opponent for June 23 in Roberto Garcia.

There is a school of thought that Saunders will meet the winner of that bout on September 15, with Frank Warren already reserving the O2 Arena for that date.

If Murray emerges victorious vs Garcia, it would only be fair for him to get his shot at Saunders.

However, Warren has chucked a new name into the hat to fight the WBO middleweight champion and boxing fans would certainly get very excited about it.

Fellow Brit James De Gale is the man, with Warren stating that Saunders could move up in weight to fight the IBF super-middleweight champion.

“He’d have to go up and give away weight if that did happen, but we will see if it can be done,” the promoter told Boxing News.

“I think all of those names are in the hat. That would be a great fight. I’m sure all the fans would come out for that. All those names at the moment are there to be considered. I’ve got to sit down with Bill, which I will do over the weekend and we’ll work out what we’re going to do.”

Saunders himself actually retweeted the De Gale news, which you can see below.

There were talks of a potential fight with Gennady Golovkin, but Warren says he always knew a rematch with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez would be arranged.

“It wasn’t frustrating," he said. "Bill wasn’t ready to fight in August, he’s injured. He can’t fight till September. We had some calls and talks about it. I always felt from day one that that fight [Golovkin-Canelo II] would go on.

"There’s no reason why it wouldn’t go on. We knew it was going to happen. I didn’t want Bill to be used as a stalking horse. We’re focused on what we’re doing.

"We’ve got an event booked for September 15, we were hoping the winner of Martin and Bill would be fighting on that date in September, booked for the O2, hopefully Bill will be fit enough to box on that.

“There’s lots of options. I want to first of all make sure Bill’s ready to fight. Because what I don’t want is yet another pull out so he’s got to be 100%.”

Saunders vs De Gale would certainly be one to whet the appetite of boxing fans.
